SHARE
A trade costs more than its fee. Spread, funding and liquidation penalties all take a share, and leverage magnifies each of them against your margin. This lesson lists every cost, shows how they add up, and covers the main risks of trading derivatives. The fee schedule below covers Aevo’s perps dex and crypto options markets.
IN THIS LESSON
Trading fees, spread, funding and liquidation penalties are the four costs to count.
On a leveraged position, costs are a bigger share of your margin than of the position.
Staking AEVO gives a trading fee discount of up to 20%, which doesn’t apply to options fees.
The main risks are liquidation, funding, volatility, smart contracts and access restrictions.
01
The four costs of a trade
Trading fees. Charged when your order fills. Makers who add liquidity usually pay less than takers who remove it.
Spread. The gap between the best bid and the best ask. You cross it when you take liquidity, and pay it again on exit.
Funding. A periodic payment between longs and shorts on a perp. It can cost you or pay you, depending on your side and the rate.
Liquidation penalty. A fee charged if a position is liquidated.
Options add the premium, and sellers also face margin requirements that move with the market.
02
Aevo's fee schedule
Figures are from Aevo’s documentation as of October 2026. Fee schedules change, so check the live schedule for the market you’re trading before you size a position. One basis point (bps) is 0.01%.
03
How the costs add up
Costs look small as a percentage of the position and large as a percentage of your margin. Set your own assumptions below. The sliders are examples, not Aevo’s rates.
What does one round trip really cost?
The sliders are your own assumptions, not Aevo's rates. Check the current fee schedule and funding rate before trading. One basis point (bps) is 0.01%.
Two lessons from playing with it: leverage multiplies the cost of every item against your margin, and funding can dominate for positions held for days.
04
The main risks
Liquidation. A move against you can close the position and take your margin. See leverage and margin.
Funding. A crowded trade can pay or cost a lot, and funding can flip direction.
Volatility and gaps. Crypto trades 24/7 and can move sharply at any hour.
Cross-margin spillover. One loss can draw on collateral backing other positions.
Smart contract and infrastructure risk. See the DEX lesson.
05
A short risk checklist
Know your liquidation price before you open the position.
Know the funding rate and who pays.
Keep free collateral in the account.
Size the position by the loss you can accept.
Read the specification for the market you’re trading.
At 10x leverage, a trade costs 0.2% of the position in total. What share of your margin is that?
Cost as a share of margin equals cost as a share of the position multiplied by leverage, so 0.2% at 10x is 2% of your margin.
Does the staking trading fee discount apply to options trades on Aevo?
The staking discount of up to 20% does not apply to options fees. Aevo OTC has no exchange fee to discount.
WHERE TO GO NEXT
Trading leveraged contracts with no expiry? Aevo runs a perps dex with on-chain settlement and 20x on BTC and ETH. If you want the option itself, Aevo is an options dex. Before sizing anything, check how liquidation works with the interactive leverage calculator. New to derivatives? The crypto derivatives guides take you from your first perp to hedging in seven short lessons.
