  • On-chain vanilla options venues traded roughly $1.44 billion in 30-day notional volume as of July 2026, with premium volume at record levels for the category.

  • Derive handled 79.2% of on-chain notional and 87.2% of premium. Rysk took 9.5% of notional and Aevo 3.1%.

  • Paradex options open interest jumped 2.6x to $202 million in the four days after its Paradigm RFQ integration went live around 15 September 2026, then crossed $250 million.

  • Perp DEXs traded about $617.7 billion over the same 30 days, roughly 430 times on-chain options notional.

  • Across crypto-native venues, options rose from about 25% to nearly 50% of bitcoin notional open interest, per Glassnode and Bybit research published in September 2026.

02 / Market size

The on-chain options market in 2026

Small in absolute terms, growing fast from a standing start.

On-chain options spent most of the last cycle as crypto’s most persistent product failure. In 2026 the category finally has sustained growth to show for its rebuild. On-chain premium volume set a record above $51 million in March 2026, according to DeFiLlama’s options dashboard, and Derive became the first on-chain options venue to cross $1.2 billion in open interest. Derive also posted a record week of $294 million in options volume for the week ending 7 March.

The growth is real, and it’s still a fraction of the offshore market.

Total BTC options notional open interest stood near $63 billion across leading venues in March 2026, up from about $39 billion a year earlier. Derive held roughly 0.8% of that, according to FalconX research using Coin Metrics data, though its daily options volume had grown to nearly 8% of Deribit’s. Derive also printed its largest trade to date on 10 March 2026, a BTC options structure worth more than $130 million.

Where on-chain volume actually sits

One venue leads, and a second tier is winning with different products.

On-chain options volume is concentrated. Derive dominates professional orderbook flow, Rysk has built a fast-growing income business on RFQ and Aevo carries the richest premium mix. The figures below cover the 30 days reported in July 2026.

  • Rysk’s monthly notional grew from $50 million in January to $182 million in May 2026, holding above $175 million in March and April.

  • Aevo’s monthly notional rose from $20 million in January to $50 million in May. DeFiLlama tracks Aevo at $39.23 billion in cumulative options notional and $108.99 million in cumulative premium since launch.

  • By 10 March 2026, options made up 61% of Derive’s open interest, flipping a perps majority from just two weeks earlier.

Premium divided by notional tells you what’s being traded.

Notional measures the size of the underlying position. Premium measures the money that actually changes hands. A venue trading far out-of-the-money strikes posts big notional and small premium, while a venue listing higher-volatility assets collects more premium per dollar. Aevo’s 5.6% ratio, the highest of the three leaders, reflects its altcoin options, which carry much higher implied volatility than BTC and ETH strikes. Move the sliders to see why.

Read incentives into the growth. Derive supports liquidity with market-maker rewards, Optimism incentives, DRV rewards and rebates. Aevo distributes 1 million AEVO a week in trading rewards, with 30% reserved for options. Those trades still count toward reported volume, so read the 2026 growth figures with the programmes in mind.

04 / History

Why earlier on-chain options failed

Almost every design has been tried, and most were abandoned.

The category has run through four architectural generations.

Tokenised vanillas

Opyn put vanilla options on Ethereum. Thin liquidity, heavy collateral requirements and high mainnet fees held it back.

Peer-to-pool

Hegic made buying simple, but left liquidity providers holding risk they couldn't hedge.

Options vaults

Ribbon, Friktion and Dopex sold volatility into thin, cyclical demand until yields compressed below the risk being taken.

Options AMMs

Lyra, Premia, Pods and Siren struggled with pricing and hedging, leaving LPs with complex volatility and inventory risk.

Power perpetuals

Opyn's Squeeth offered ETH-squared exposure without expiries, but proved hard to explain and costly to hold when funding ran hot.

Each generation failed for the same structural reasons.

Weak market-maker participation produced thin two-sided liquidity and pushed unhedgeable risk onto passive LPs. The user experience landed in no man’s land, too complex for retail and too primitive for professionals.

05 / What changed

Four shifts behind the 2026 recovery

  • Cheaper blockspace. Rollups and Ethereum scaling cut gas costs enough to make complex on-chain actions economical.

  • Professional execution. Central limit order books and RFQ systems replaced AMMs, so market makers can quote specific strikes and expiries, update in real time and control risk.

  • Capital efficiency. Portfolio margin and yield-bearing collateral let professionals do more with less.

  • Narrower targets. Venues stopped trying to rebuild Deribit on-chain and started solving specific problems for specific users.

Most leading venues now share one design.

Orders match off-chain at exchange speed, and settlement happens on-chain. Aevo was early to this model with its own OP Stack rollup, and it’s now the dominant pattern for decentralized derivatives. The animation below follows a single order through that process.

Figure 3 / Animated

Simplified. Matching latency reflects Aevo's published sub-10ms figure; rollup and Ethereum finality take longer and vary.

How price gets made decides who carries the risk.

AMMs asked passive LPs to write options against all comers. Order books and RFQ put that job back with professional market makers, who can hedge on other venues. Switch between the three models below.

06 / Venue map

The decentralized options venues of 2026

Similar plumbing, very different products.

The leaders have converged on hybrid execution while diverging sharply on who they serve.

Orderbook / OP Stack L2

Derive

Cross-margined options and perps on its own rollup, built for market makers, institutions and volatility traders. It has processed more than $20 billion in lifetime notional and began an institutional pilot in January 2026 that lets firms post BTC or ETH held at their own custodian as collateral.

Orderbook / OP Stack L2

Aevo

Off-chain CLOB with on-chain settlement on a custom rollup. Options and perps share one cross-margin account, OTC trades happen on mainnet outside the regular margin system, and PERPS+ wraps options protection around a perp in one tap on desktop and mobile.

RFQ / Income

Rysk

Market makers quote specific requests and hedge elsewhere. Built around covered calls and cash-secured puts with selectable strikes, it counts Nasdaq-listed HYPE treasury company Hyperion among the firms running strategies on its rails.

Orderbook + RFQ / Starknet

Paradex

Launched dated options in late March 2026 alongside zero retail fees, then integrated Paradigm's institutional RFQ network in September, unlocking multi-leg strategies on the platform.

Orderbook / Portfolio margin

Kyan

Evolved out of Premia into a broader derivatives exchange with portfolio margin and multi-leg combo trades.

Yield product / HyperEVM

Hypersurface

Packages covered calls and cash-secured puts as yield strategies for the Hyperliquid ecosystem.

RFQ / Equities

CallPut

Extends vanilla on-chain options beyond crypto to stocks such as TSLA, NVDA and COIN through request-based execution.

Liquidity ranges / Perpetual

Panoptic

Turns Uniswap-style liquidity positions into perpetual options with streaming premia. V2 launched perpetual options on ETH and SPCX.

Latest / September 2026

Paradex imports institutional liquidity through Paradigm

Around 15 September, Paradex connected to Paradigm's request-for-quote network. Options open interest rose 2.6x to $202 million within four days and passed $250 million soon after, with daily notional settling between $14.5 million and $17.6 million. The venue also printed a record $15.76 million ETH options trade at a premium of roughly 0.29% of notional.

The options surge came as Paradex's perps book shrank. Perps open interest ran between $500 million and $800 million at the start of 2026 and had fallen to roughly $10 million to $20 million by September, so options now make up the large majority of the venue's open interest.

07 / Product

Options without the options

The clearest demand comes from people who never call themselves options traders.

On a Castle Labs stream in July 2026 with Kalshi, GammaSwap and Block Scholes, Rysk summed up the lesson its builders keep returning to.

“The option is not the product; the benefit of the option is the product.” — Rysk, via Castle Labs, July 2026

Rysk says its newer product has seen more than $1 billion in open positions over the past year, mostly from DeFi users earning income on assets they already hold. Kalshi reported handling about 86% of global crypto binary options volume, with 15-minute markets as the sweet spot. Block Scholes, which supplies pricing to venues including Derive, said it powers roughly 90% of on-chain options volume.

PERPS+ applies the same idea to the biggest market in crypto.

Most on-chain traders already use perps. Aevo’s PERPS+ attaches options protection to a perp at entry, so traders get a defined outcome without picking strikes, expiries or volatility. It’s live for BTC and ETH perps on desktop and, since 16 July 2026, in the Aevo mobile app. Pick a mode below and compare it with a naked long.

08 / Frontier

New payoffs that listed markets can't easily offer

On-chain venues are experimenting well beyond calls and puts.

  • Perpetual options replace fixed expiries with streaming premia for continuous convex exposure. Traders still manage an ongoing funding cost and give up a known upfront premium.

  • Panoptic builds perpetual options from Uniswap V3-style liquidity ranges, which makes options possible on long-tail assets already trading on AMMs.

  • GammaSwap let users borrow AMM liquidity for perpetual option exposure in V1 and has since moved toward orderbook-based binary markets.

  • Touch options such as Euphoria’s Tap Trading pay out if price reaches a level within seconds, with payouts quoted upfront by market makers.

Prediction markets are binary options by another name.

A contract paying a fixed amount if BTC closes above a level, and nothing otherwise, is a binary option. Count those markets and on-chain options volume is far larger than vanilla figures suggest. Short-dated products like these mostly compete with perps and mobile betting, because users get convex exposure without funding rates, liquidations or theta to manage.

09 / Scale

The perps gap

For every dollar of on-chain options notional, perp DEXs trade about $430.

Perp DEXs recorded roughly $617.7 billion in 30-day volume against about $1.44 billion for on-chain options. Perp DEX open interest stood near $14.5 billion. OAK Research estimated in March 2026 that on-chain options trade at roughly 0.2% of on-chain perp volume.

Figure 6 / Animated

431 squares: perps against options, 30 days to July 2026

Perp DEX volume, $1.44B per squareAll on-chain options notional

Perps are the obvious distribution channel for options.

Glassnode’s September 2026 report describes the same split across the whole market: leverage moved into perpetuals and risk pricing moved into options, and options volume now runs more than three times its 2021 level. The fastest route to options users runs through the perps liquidity that already exists, which is exactly what products like PERPS+ are built to use.

10 / Context

How the wider options market is moving

Options now hold nearly half of crypto-native bitcoin derivatives risk.

Glassnode and Bybit’s State of Crypto Derivatives, published in September 2026, found options rose from about a quarter to nearly half of bitcoin notional open interest on crypto-native venues, while dated futures volume sits about 97% below its 2021 peak. Options gained share in four of five market regimes since 2019, growing fastest during a long bear market.

Source: CoinGlass. Covers $864.6B of BTC and ETH options volume across five major crypto-native exchanges; excludes CME and ETF options.

  • Deribit is losing share and taking a bigger role at Coinbase. Its monthly volume share fell from 56.3% in January to 41.8% in June 2026. Coinbase, which closed its $2.9 billion acquisition in August 2025, is now consolidating its international derivatives business onto Deribit.

  • Bybit is the fast mover. Its share of bitcoin options volume across four crypto-native venues rose from under 10% to 28%, it leads ETH options volume and it holds 97.1% of tracked gold options open interest.

  • ETF options rival offshore books. IBIT options open interest passed Deribit’s for the first time in April 2026, and IBIT call volume hit a record 1.58 million contracts on 19 August.

  • CME is a futures story. Options are roughly 1% of CME’s crypto contract volume, with about $761 million in bitcoin options open interest in September 2026, even after it moved crypto futures and options to 24/7 trading.

Why this matters on-chain.

Institutions are choosing wrappers and custody setups they already trust. Derive’s off-exchange custody pilot and Paradex’s Paradigm link show decentralized venues meeting that demand halfway. Derive’s pilot opened in January 2026 with a $2 million to $5 million initial allocation, and both bring professional liquidity on-chain without asking institutions to change how they hold assets.

11 / Volatility

Cheap upside, expensive protection

2026 produced an unusual volatility pattern.

One-month bitcoin call implied volatility fell to 32.7% in mid-August, the lowest in VanEck’s data since 2021, while put volatility held near 40%. Volmex’s BVIV index fell to 35.59% on 10 August, its lowest since September 2025. The put/call premium ratio hit an extreme 2.30 against a historical norm of 0.71, with the whole rise in premium coming from downside hedging.

The call sellers are the same people DeFi income products serve.

Miners and treasury companies increasingly sell calls against spot holdings, according to FalconX, which adds supply and pushes call volatility down. That’s precisely the covered-call flow Rysk and Hypersurface have built around. Cheap upside also makes buying calls, or protected long positions, relatively inexpensive when volatility is this compressed.

12 / Outlook

What to watch next

  • Imported liquidity. After Paradex, expect more venues to plug into existing RFQ and market-maker networks, as Paradex did with Paradigm in September 2026.

  • Institutional collateral. Off-exchange custody and tokenised collateral could narrow the gap with Deribit and IBIT open interest.

  • Abstraction. Protected perps, income vaults and short-dated binaries are where new users arrive. Rysk’s $1 billion in open positions and PERPS+’s three preset modes both sell a defined outcome with the option underneath.

  • Prediction market convergence. As binaries and vanilla options meet in the same interfaces, category totals will be redefined.

  • Incentive tapering. Aevo’s weekly 1 million AEVO epoch and Derive’s DRV rewards are the programmes to watch as they step down.

WHERE TO GO NEXT

If you want the option itself, Aevo is an options dex where Easy Mode reduces a trade to three decisions. For size, custom strikes or altcoins, the crypto options OTC desk prices your exact request, on mainnet and outside the regular margin system. Trading leveraged contracts with no expiry? Aevo runs a decentralized perps exchange with on-chain settlement and 20x on BTC and ETH. If calls, puts and premium are unfamiliar, options trading explained covers the building blocks.
